The challenge was to develop a simple to use 3d printer for everyone from kids to adults.
A plug and play printer that with an overall friendly and functional experience.
Generated initial ID concepts exploring how we might design a friendly printer. Worked on the interaction and experience design of the printer.
The first step I took was to understand the current landscape. What are others doing and what is the opportunity others are missing. In addition I broke down what are the interactions with the printer and software to discover how this could be simplified and improved.
One example of an insight with the current product is that there was no visual way to see how much material was in the cartridge without going onto the UI. By making the cartidge transparent the customer could determine in advance when new material needed to be ordered or replaced.
I tried to imagine ways to enable new users of 3d printing by creating concepts for applications. I wanted a simple enough way to introduce the user to CAD without the complexity. The Lego wheel generator was a way taking an everyday toy and enhacing it with the use of a 3d printer.
What if an app could help guide the user through the unboxing experience or let you know what needs to be checked or maintained. I explored various ideas to help determine if the benifit outweighs the resources required.
